Rosina Romano, Casino, Italy

Post by jeri71 »

After much searching, I found the name of my great-grandmother's sister.

She was born Rosina (sp?) Romano in 1890, in Casino, Italy to Dominica LaRuffa and Gabriel Romano.

At some point she came to America and married a Tallerico (I don't know if she married here or in Italy). She died in California in 1959.

Gabriel traveled to Brazil on business (what would that be?) and died there when Rosina was 4 years old. She had one younger sister, Maria (my great-grandmother). According to my great-aunt, Gabriel had 9 brothers.

I don't know the name of Rosina's husband, or when she came to America. I have not been able to trace the family past Dominica and Gabriel and would appreciate any help that's out there. :D

There are no Casino city, town or village in Italy. There are Casino hyphenated names of three places in Italy which were not towns but Frazioni (suburbs of larger towns) where the archives would exist for persons from those suburbs.

Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in Casino and click cerca for all three frazione to appear. The name of the province, region and town to which these 3 suburbs were part of is listed along with the town zip code (CAP).

Once you identify the correct town then you can rerquest documents to trace your fmaily or perhaps view micorfilms at the nearest Mormon church familyhistory library. (www.familysearch.org for nearest location). =Peter=

Casino became Castelsilano (KR) in 1916. It's in the Calabria region of southern Italy.

I will ask my aunt if she remembers any of the children's names. All I know is Rosina's birthday and the place they came from.

The 1920 census seems off, does that list Rosina's father's name as Frank? Her father's name was Gabriel.

I think the 1930 census that lists her husband as James is the most promising. The maiden name is correct and I agree with the naming tradition of the daughter Dominica. Also, the children John(Giovanni) and Filomena match up with the children traveling with Rosina on the 1921 ship's manifest. The Rosina on the manifest almost certainly has to be my Rosina - the mother's name and town of origin are perfectly correct. But there are two husbands listed, Vincenzo and James.

I agree the 1930 census seems more accurate, as well as the match to the manifest. Vincenzo was more than likely his given name, using James as his American name, although I've seen Vince, or Vincent more frequently.
Let us know if your Aunt can confirm any of the children listed... :)
