Ok this is out in left field for sure, but the more I think about it I suspect this is why my grandparents thought they were US citizens. As a small child I remember my grandfather talking about buying your papers from the alderman her in Chicago (west-side, little Italy) Johnny Powers know as de-pow by the Italians. This cost $10. Of course this is not legal and there is no record of it in the naturalization records ( phew) . But does anyone have any history on this. Thank goodness for the chicago way of doing business! I wounder if there is a historical record of corruption? hehehe
