I know that my family is 100% Italian but I didn't think that the name Daniels was.
My grandfather's surname was Ronzo and my grandmother's was Daniels. I have been able to find some information about the Ronzo side but none for the Daniels side. Is it possible it was changed when they entered the U.S.?
Can Daniels be an Italian name?
Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
Hello! Is it possible it was changed when they entered the U.S.?
Probably not at Ellis Island (or another port), but afterward.
Folks 'Americanized' their names for various reasons.
Here's a pretty neat article:

Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
There are 7 cities, towns or villages in Sicily, Campania, Lazio, Sardinia, Lombardia and Veneto regions with persons who are surnamed Daniels.'
The surname does not appear in the italian surname dictionary, however, it is imported from abroad into Italy and as yet has not been italianized, as it were. The sunrname dates back to 1699 in Italy as Daniel as well as Daniels. Go to www.familysearch.org under ancestor search.
If you go to www.paginebianche.it and put in Daniels inthe first line and at separate times put in Sicily, Sardinia, Campania..etc etc etc and click CERCA for a full reading of the persons surnamed Daniels.

Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
I suppose one might be tempted to say the Daniels name has been italianized when one considers DANIELI as a variation of Daniels. This Italian version is listed in the Italian surname dictionary with Daniele being the biblical variant.
The surname Daniel or Daniels, however, is not listed as a variant, derivative, alteration or abbreviation of Danieli. The closest is Dani

Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
Peter, yes it would be interesting! My only problem is going to be finding someone from that side of the family! My grandmother and most of her siblings have passed - i think 2 or 3 are still alive.
My guess is it was not my great grandparents that changed it - I assume this because they had been here for at least 10 years when the 1930 census was taken - and they were still using Danieri then. (I know this because my grandmother LUCY was born here and she was 10 then - even though the census says 8 - odd).
I think it must have been the kids that decided to change the name. I'm going to try to get in touch with my cousins and see if they know anything.
On another topic - is there a way to trace my great grandparents in Italy? Both of them were born there and I believe married there too, though I wouldn't know exactly where - I think Sicily.

Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
When you ask about the name change also ask about their townof origin in Italy and send a form letter asking for their respective birth records and whatever other documents you wish from that townof origin.
Go to http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html
There is no charge just make each document a separate request. =Peter=

Re: Can Daniels be an Italian name?
My grandfather's surname is also Ronzo. He came to US from Cesa (I believe) and was born in 1881. Do you have a Giovanni Ronzo in your family tree?
