Italian Lancers?

Hi

I am doing some research on the behalf of someone this is what he would like to know.

I have recently discovered that my great grandfather, Martino CIANGRETTA, was a member
of the 'ITALIAN LANCERS' 1853 - 1888, I assume that that is military?

Anyone any idea how I can follow that up for more infomation on him
