Any help would be appreciated in tracking down this relative !!

He was born in Petralia Sottana 19 Jan 1890.
He married (in Petralia) Grazia Cassera in August 1913. Her date of birth was 11 Aug 1889.
They arrived at Ellis Island together on 21 Nov 1913 on "The Barbarossa". It was their first time in America, and they planned to join Francesco's uncle Andrea Tomasino in Bessemer, PA.

I am not having much luck in finding out about Bessemer; would the town or historical society have records of people who came and worked there?

I have looked at the 1920 and 1930 census with no results, and do not see either of their names coming back again at Ellis Island.

I have found a Grace Inguaggiato in the SS Death Index, but the birth dates don't match.

It's always possible they returned to Sicily.

In checking the ship manifest you mentioned, both Francesco and Grazia's names are lined out which indicates they did not sail on that vessel's voyage. Any chance they decided not to come to the US?

Biff they can verify departure or no departure from the town Ufficio Anagrafe which may list continuous resideence or departures. =Peter=

Hello everyone!

I am revisiting this issue of an ancestor and his wife. I had found them on the Ellis Island site on a ship manifest (as told in my first post) from 1913.
Their names are crossed out on the manifest, and I was told ( in the previous post), that this means they did not board the ship and sail to New York in 1913. According to the manifest this was a ship which departed from Naples. These two people were from Sicily. Does that mean they traveled all the way to Naples and gave their information to someone (the ship's agent?) and then something happened that caused them not to get on the ship, and at some point their name was crossed off.

Would anyone be willing to present some possible scenarios of what happened in this case; what have you observed in the past with other crossed out names? Any creative possibilites would be welcome !

I believe the manifest was created over a period of days prior to sailing; sometimes people would "sign up" for a voyage and then not board due to illness, family matters, fear, whatever.

One of the remarkable points about the New York passenger arrivals records is the number of people who literally "missed the boat".
In a random sampling of manifests it was discovered that between 4% and 10% of all names were lined out. In order of frequency, these are the usual reasons:

- unknown (mostly crew members)
- "did not sail" or "did not embark"
- name transferred to another class (such as alien to citizen)
- name duplicated on another page of the manifest
- landed at another port (such as Boston instead of New York)

Literally missing the boat no doubt meant delays in getting to the port of departure, using more funds than anticipated, waiting for exit papers, hoping for an illness to end, or perhaps a change of heart. Others could not board because the vessel was already full, or the quota for the month was full
