801Webster Ave Pittsburgh: address of interest

Hi,

In reading ship manifests, I have noticed that the address 801 Webster Ave Pittsburgh has been listed alot for people travelling or immigrating to USA in the early 1900's, particularly from Sinopoli and S.Eufemia Calabria.

I would like to start a post listing people who may have listed this address as I am trying to find out if my Great Grandfather Cosmo Monterosso had any brothers or sisters, as he died somewhere in America around 1926.

He was listed at this address in 1911 when his was joined by his brother in law (wifes brother) Giuseppe Condina, and again it was listed on his ship manifest when he went to work in the mines again in 1925. There may be a link with a Grazia Monterosso who's husband is Vincenzo Romeo or with the surname Fedele as he travelled with his nephew Carmello Fedele in 1907.

Please add to this post if you had any ancestors list this address on their ship manifests, even if you think it is not relevant.

Also, does anyone know if its possible to search for a particular address in the census data.

Hi,

I also have family who show that they were going to stay with someone at 801 Webster Ave, PA. This was in Oct of 1910 on the Taormina ship from Naples to Italy. Filippo Curinga was going to stay with cousin and the man above him, whose name is Rocco Murdaca, was going to stay with his brother at that address.

In 1902, a manifest for my great grandfather Pasquale Sacco shows that he was going to stay with relatives at 602 Webster Ave. and a few years later, his wife and children joined him at 607-609 Webster Ave. and others from the same comune (San Mango d'Aquino in Calabria) were going to the same address. I believe he left Pittsburgh by 1910 but I'm not positive so I may do a thorough 1910 census search and see what comes up.

I did a google search for Italians at Webster Avenue in Pittsburgh and there is a link to pages from an Italian American Encyclopedia listing the history of Italians in Pittsburgh and it specifically mentions Webster Avenue as being one of main centers of the Pittsburgh Italian community in the early 20th century.

My Grandfather, Nicodemo Russo, is listed on the ship manifest for the Albert Koenig, which left from the Port of Naples and arrived at Ellis Island Dec 20 or Dec. 21, 1905. He lists his final destination as 801 Webster Ave.Pittsburgh, PA as the home address of his brother Guglielmo Russo.

It looks like that was the address of a "steamship agent" that was owned by V. De Luca. My guess is that those that were coming to the US that didn't have a true sponsor used this address as their destination.

I had someone going to that address in 1902.
