military records
I am looking for military records for my Great Grandfather, Carmelo Middione born in l856 in Campobello Di Licata and my Grandfather born October 19, 1878 in Campobello Di Licata. Does anyone know where I should write to get a copy. I would also like their birth certificates.
Thanks

Re: military records
Military records are held by the State Archives. You can use a letter such as this to request them:
Full names should be written in lastname firstname format in all caps, thus "SMITH JOHN". Dates should be written dd month yyyy with the month spelled out in all lower case (01 febbraio 1885). If you don't know the exact date, put "circa 1856".
"bisnonno" is great-grandfather; "nonno" is grandfather.
Basically, the letter says,
Dear sirs,
My name is ... I live in the United States of America at the address above.
I am requesting the full military discharge records and conscription record for my grandfather who was born in ... on ... His father's name was ... and his mother's maiden name was...
I will be pleased to reimburse you for the cost of copying and postage if you will let me know the amount.
Sincerely,
You could try making the request by email (as-ag@beniculturali.it); personally I prefer the formality of a written letter. The cost usually comes to just a few Euros.

Re: military records
Birth, marriage, and death certificates are held by the comune where the event took place. You can use a similar letter to request those:
You can instead request photocopies of the original registry entries. These are handwritten documents, in Italian (obviously), and can be very difficult to decipher - though they include a great deal of additional information.
You can change the request to get copies by swapping some words around:
Birth/marriage/death photocopies of original registry pages are called: Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte
Birth/marriage/death computer-generated extracts are: Estratto Per Riassunto Per Atto Di Nascita/Matrimonio/Morte
You could try sending the above via email to anagrafe@comune.campobellodilicata.ag.it (remove the spaces). Some comuni respond to email, others do not...
As written above, the letter requests birth (nascita) and ("e") marriage (matrimonio) extracts. These are usually computer-generated documents which show date of birth, parent's names, and often additional notations.

Egregi Signori,
Vi sarei estremamente grata se poteste effettuare una ricerca nei vostri registri e spedirmi il estratto per riassunto per atto di nascita e estratto per riassunto per atto di matrimonio.
• MIDDIONE CARMELO (miei bisnonno) nato nel Comune di Campobello Di Licata [date of birth] paternità ’ [father's given name/nome if you know it], maternità [mother's maiden name if you know it "SMITH JANE"]
• MIDDIONE [grandfather's given name] (miei nonno) nato nel Comune di Campobello Di Licata [date of birth] paternità CARMELO, maternità [mother's maiden name if you know it "SMITH JANE"]
Grazie mille.
Distinti saluti,

Can you please check this email address on the previous post
"You could try making the request by email (as-ag@.beniculturali.it); personally I prefer the formality of a written letter. The cost usually comes to just a few Euros."
as when I tried to use it it didn't work. Should the dot after @ be there?
Thanks for the information on writing the letters. It is very helpful.

Carmine,
Would this be the same email to request records for someone from the Salerno region in Campania?

Re: military records
I emailed the address above and they told me I need to send my request to Salerno archives. I was under the impression that the email address above WAS for Salerno archives. Is there another email someone can recommend? I had it in the past and lost it
Oops! My mistake I sent it to Napoli province on accident.

Re: military records
Cervinara is a comune in the province of Avellino, thus you would write to:
Archivio di Stato di Avellino
Via G. Verdi, 15/17
83100 Avellino AV
ITALY
