What is the English translation of Ermenegildo?
Can someone tell me what the English version of the name Ermenegildo would be?
Re: What is the English translation of Ermenegildo?
I don't think there is an English equivalent. I just found the following:
Ermenegildo
English translation/equivalent: Ermenegildo
Origin: Derived from a Germanic name of Gothic tradition, composed from ermin- or irmin "great," and gildi "that has value and consistency," refering originally to the celebration of the sacraments.
Name Day/Onomastico: April 14—in honor of St. Ermenegildo, Visigoth king who converted to Catholicism and was executed for his actions in 585.

The name Ermenegildo is a masculine name often shortened in Gildo (pronunced Jeel-doh) although Gildo is a first name too. A bit old fashion names and mainly used in Northern Italy. There is also a feminine version for both names: Ermenegilda and Gilda.

I know this is an old thread, but I just found it searching for info on my grandfather Ermenegildo and figured I'd add to it in case it helps anyone else who comes across it like I did.
My Italian grandfather (born in the south in Puglia/Apulia), was born Ermenegildo but was recorded in the 1920 census as Adam. He was very young then but as he got older he went by Herm and Herman. Not sure if Adam was a common translation or why his parents went with that if not common.
