More Than One Last Name

I have found records (baptism and marriage) where the person has 2 last names. Mostly they were females. I am now finding a few with 3 last names. A few of them were male.

Is there any reason for this.

Adelfio: I will have to find them again on the family search site and then figure out how to post them. I haven't done this before.

I have had the same thing happen to me. my great grandpa and his brothers have 2 last names, Harry Trucano Bamia. can't figure it out.

This is just a question.....

Possibly are you mistaking last names and middle names? My grandmothers birth certificate from Mussomeli shows her name as

NIGRELLI Carmela Geatana Salvatrice.

Just a thought.
