AIRE registration time in Chicago

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

AIRE registration time in Chicago

Post by LAROCCAMOM »

Hello again:

I sent the application to the Chicago Italian consulate for my passport. They said that once received I should expect an email in 2-3 weeks with an appointment date and time. But, they said that I first need to UP-DATE my AIRE because I was registered under the Miami consulate when I lived there, now in order for them to process anything through Chicago, I would need to register my AIRE here.
Does anyone knows how long they take to process such form? I am in desperate need of my passport and until this is sorted there's no moving forward.

Thank you.

Updating AIRE shouldn't take more than a day or two; it is simply them typing the information from your form into the computer database.

This is a good time to point out that, as an Italian citizen, you have certain legal obligations that you should make every effort to comply with. Among these is notifying the nearest consulate whenever your address changes - whether two houses down the street or across country. You are also obligated to inform them of changes in your marital status and family changes such as the birth of a child or the death of a child or spouse.

Thank you for your reply.
I had about that as well, but when sending an email to my consulate inquiring about the processing time for the application, their response was:
"Una volta acquisita tutta la documentazione (e pervenuto l'eventuale NULLA-OSTA se prescritto o ritenuto comunque necessario al completamento dell'istruttoria) il passaporto sara' rilasciato/rinnovato nei tempi stabiliti dalle Legge (15 giorni).
Passport Office"
My Italian is not perfect but I think they are talking about the passport here.
I will nevertheless, going to contact them on Monday to see how the application is doing.

Thank you for all your help.

I understand it to say that the passport will be issued within 15 days after making proper application. In my experience, it usually happens much faster than that; under the right conditions you may even be able to wait for it or pick it up the same day.

I do want to point out something of importance: if you have minor children, you will need their father's permission to obtain passports for them in their own names, and will almost certainly also need his permission to apply for your own passport. This applies whether or not you are still married to their father; the only exceptions I know of are if the father is deceased or you have court-ordered full custody of the children.

You are correct.
I already sent out the passport application and my husband had to give me and our children permission to do so.

Thank you.

Is the USA passport a requirement?
I received an email from the Italian consulate in Chicago. They say that the only thing that we are missing is a copy of my children's USA passports. I sent an email back explaining that they don't have the USA passport yet. They will be applying for them next week. I haven't heard back from them as of yet.
Do you think that is going to be an issue?

Thank you
