Change in family surname

Post by grumpy215 »

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes. My great-grandfather was born in Ravanusa, Sicily as Salvatore Tornambe. All of his children born there have that last name as well. Then sometime in the 1870's he moved to Canicatti, Sicily and documents from there refer to him and his children born there as Tornamme. Can anyone shed any light on why this would occur?
Thanks for any insights.

Alots of time its human error just like ship manifest's names my surname was changed 3 times to the present day. Both of those surnames are well know in those areas and are close in spelling one little chicken scratch writing error and there you go a name change in your family then come over to the US and who knows what happens to the spelling.

not uncommon....examples...Gambino - Gammino, Giambanco - Giammanco, Tolumbello - Tolummello. These differences happen even within the same commune.

When I research these names I check for both spellings.
