Permanent residency for spouse

Does anyone know how to get a permanent residency for my spouse.
Now that I am an Italian citizen we are thinking of the possibility of relocating but I want to make sure that he will be allowed to liva and work there.

I think the right way to do this is to first visit your local consulate and obtain a "Family Reunion Visa" - you are Chicago, correct? http://www.consdetroit.esteri.it/Consol ... ropean.htm

Once in Italy, he will need to apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno per Motivi Familiari - permit to stay for family reasons.
