locating info....
so far so good...i have sent out letters requesting birth and marriage documents, located & composed letters to relatives in talamello,( all in italian ) thanks to all of you wonderful people who provided much needed help. however, i am having trouble using the lds ( latter day saints ) website. do they have databases to use online or is it neccesary to visit in person? also, cupi seems to be an unusual name as i have not located it in any surname searches. any tips on how to research the name itself?
Re: locating info....
The LDS must be explored personally since there is much information that can be obtained but cannot be taught here. Cupi is found in 56 vities, towns and villages in Italy stretching from the south to the far north. Please explain what you mean by research? Do you mean the name itself and its meaning, if any or do you mean your specific family background??Peter
Re: locating info....
located a local lds, not more than a 15 minute drive, adding it to my homework asignments, lol. as for the name, it's meaning, if any, and origin.
Re: locating info....
cupi is not listed in the italy surname dictionary and must be considered local in origin and or "imported". You may wish to go to www.google.com and insert CUPI Genealogy in the title and see who has or is doing research on the surname. Peter
Re: locating info....
i have finished my homework peter!!!! the nara site is extensive as well as informative. if anyone new to tracing the family tree is hoping to locate all information thru databases, think again. websites can provide general info, but the details require legwork!! i was pleased to see that there are some sites which are asking for volunteers to transcribe records to make more available online, an immense undertaking given the amount of records on microfilm.
i would recommend conducting interviews as you will, of all family members. i am currently drawing up a questionaire to send out to family. ask who, what, when and where. are there old documents, pictures, letters, even a postcard has a postmark.
in one phone call to a cousin i learned that three of my family members had their names altered from what was original to the birth certificate, and he has the e-mail addy, phone and address of a family member there in pesaro. so now we may have a contact person to work thru.
on another note, i found out that the words cupi-cupi refers to a noisemaker!! and your suggestion to use the google site returned 14 cupi's in france doing research, so it may be a safe bet to say the name is imported. thanks for the tips!!
