ARTUSO of Corleto Perticara

Post by Wartuso »

Hello, all :)

I am currently researching roots prior to 1850.
My lineage beginning with my great-grandfather is as follows:

Domenico ARTUSO (1899 Potenza, Italy -1972 New York) (wife was Antonia Tocci)

son of

Saverio ARTUSO (1865-1916) and Maria TOCCI

son of

Giuseppe ARTUSO (? - ?) and Grazia DI TARANTO

The TOCE family is rooted in Craco, Italy. My great-grandpa Dominick's naturalization forms suggest he was born in Potenza, Italy, although research leads me to believe the name ARTUSO is densely populated in Corleto Perticara during the 19th century.

Saverio was not born in Craco, but lived there with his wife after their marriage in Craco in 1894 (shortly before immigrating to New York).

Ideally, I would truly appreciate help building a plan to figure out who Giuseppe and Grazia were. I am stuck there and I am hoping to research as far back as I can go, but I just don't know where to begin after utilizing as many internet resources and New York Public Library resources as possible!

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers to all,
William

Welcome to IG website William. Do you have Saverio's marriage record from Craco (if your sure they were married there) it should say where he was born and his parents names mothers maiden names where they lived at the time and possible birth locations
If you havent got the marriage record Family History LIbrary has Civil registration of supplemental marriage documents, banns, miscellaneous documents, births, marriages and death from Craco, Matera, Italy 1809-1929 on micro film so you can get there marriage record
Ordering films from FHL

The surname Artuso in the Potenza region is common in Craco and Montescaglioso

Thanks for the welcome! I am excited to explore my own ancestry and to help others explore theirs.

Thanks also for the help. I do not have a copy as the Family History Library hasn't been able to offer me that microfilm yet, but they do have it on file. I think perhaps someone else has it right now.

According to The Craco Society, the marriage was definitely on file for 1894 in Craco. However, if Saverio's son Dominick was born in Potenza, then wouldn't I should search there for Giuseppe?

I've never searched Montescaglioso, thanks for the suggestions! I will try following through again right now.

You know I did some looking online at ancestry.com for Dominick Artuso you said born in Potenza 1899 found no birth record at Potenza > Potenza > Indice Annuale Nascite > 1898-1901 or Potenza > Corleto Perticara > Indice Annuale Nascite > 1898-1901 You know that Potenza is both a comune and a province. Maybe on there records they are generalizing the area they lived in such as province Potenza which could mean any town within the province

Checked that and noted.

Is there any way I could search online for any kinds of records from the Potenza region between 1850-1890 for births, marriages, deaths?

ancestry.com has towns of the province of Potenza with a subsription for viewing not all the towns but alot of them
I when through the birth indexes of Corleto Perticara,Potenza 1867-1871 did not find the surname Artuso listed in the index with any first name

I made a mistake. The TOCE family is from Corleto Perticara, I don't know for sure where the Artuso family is from. Only Potenza is listed as the home "town" of the relatives... I'll have to check your suggestion.

Rocco, a son of Giuseppe and sibling of my 2x great grandfather Saverio, is listed as coming from Bagnara, which I've never heard of! I think it's in a different region.

If you look on the Ship Manifest for Rocco Artuso
Name:Rocco Artuso
Arrival Date:25 Jul 1907
Birth Year:abt 1853
Birth Location Other: Montescaglioso
Age:54
Gender:Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality:Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure:Napoli
Port of Arrival:New York, New York
Ship Name:Nord America
If you look on page two of the ship manifest it gives birth location as
Montescaglioso Potenza but over the years the area has changed to Matera province its Montescaglioso,Matera for civil records. The records for Montescaglioso,Matera are not on ancestry.com right now at the present time. I think this where the Artuso's come from Montescaglioso,Matera
