Agrigento, Sicily : Realmonte, Porto Empedole; related recor

As of March 2012 the Family Search web has posted records for the Sicilian provence of Agregento, Italy, under the heading "Italy, Agrigento, Agrigento, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910". This is a bit of a misnomer since it is not just for the city of Agrigento in the provence of Agrigento but rather records that include quite a few (all?) of the comune (municipalities) in the Province of Agrigento. . I am currently interested in a number of the comune, including Agregento, Realmonte and Porto Empedole and have been searching through the records for a couple of days. As per my experience, the "Family Search" web site has poor, misleading or non-existent documentation. It is as though it was copied (I can't thank them enough for that) and that is it. So, as I plow through the documents I will try to post some documentation here. In that regard here is a tiny start. The following is a table I have composed for the structure of some of the marriage (matrimoni) records for Realmonte: Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910, Realmonte, Matrimoni 1866-1909. I list where you can find the index, where you can find the record (registro) and what appears to be missing. I'm not sure if this will format correctly, but here it goes! If / when I get more, I will post it. Note that there is also a stand-alone index, that I am not addressing at present. Wishing you all the best, Ciao.

Find these records by:

(1) going to the main page at https://www.familysearch.org/.
(2) click on Europe
(3) click on Italy
(4) click on Italy, Agrigento, Agrigento, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910
(5) click on Browse through 433,777 images (or whatever number of images they have that day)
(6) click on Realmonte (or other comune if that is your desire)
(7) click on Matrimoni 1866-1909
(8) enter the image number after the word, you guessed it, “image”. It will then take you to the part of the document listed below.

A little more help on locating a relative in the area, and a trick or two.

I was able to locate the index entry for the birth record of my grandfather on image 7 in “Italy, Agrigento, Agrigento, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910, Realmonte, Indici decennali (matrimoni, morti, nati) 1876-1905”, with the family name being DeFilippo, not DeFilippi. I was then able to locate the birth record itself (in the “Registro”), found on image 276 in Italy, Agrigento, Agrigento, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910, Realmonte, Nati 1866-1910. He was born on the 6th of January 1876. I also found Luigi’s bother, my great uncle, Francesco. Their parents were a match to my records.

Knowing that Luigi’s parents were Giovanni DeFilippi / DeFilippo and Antonia Fiorentini / Fiorentino I then searched the Agrigento / Agrigento records for their marriage, which I suspected occurred around 1870 to 1875, based upon the date of birth of Luigi. The names were nowhere to be found in the record of the city of Agrigento.

I then concluded that it was possible that Antonia Fiorentini / Fiorentino was not from the city of Agrigento, but rather a neighboring city or town in the Agrigento area (Agrigento Province). After wasting a number of futile hours I decided to narrow down the possibilities a bit by using a “trick”. [I am a biochemist, and whenever a particularly useful technique is used it is often referred to as a “trick”]. So the trick I used was to map out the location of anyone with a family name (cognome) of Fiorentini / Fiorentino and see where it might have a significant population (present day). To find an alternate town ran a search for Fiorentini and Fiorentino in http://www.italianames.com at http://www.italianames.com/italian-last ... /AGRIGENTO and found the names focused in "Porto Empedocle". Sure enough a search of the index for Porto Empedocle was fruitful. On image 13 Italy, Agrigento, Agrigento, Civil Registration (Tribunale), 1866-1910, Porto Empedocle, Indici decennali (matrimoni) 1866-1895 there is an entry for a Giovanni DeFilippo, my great-grandfather, referencing the year 1871 and a registry number [Numero di Registro] of 19. The proof would be if I also found a matching entry for my great-grandmother There are two references to an Antonia Fiorentino, one for 1866, referencing Numero di Registro 7, and one for 1871 (a match!) referencing Numero di Registro 19. From this I could confidently conclude that the marriage took place in Porto Empedocle in the year 1871. However, I then hit a dead end, since the actual marriage records [Registro di Matrimoni, 1867-1910, Porto Empedole] for the year of interest were not present. I will now continue to search and will report relevant findings & tricks that may be useful to others.
