Inserra of NY/NJ..wherever!

Post by Kins5 »

My name is Kyle Inserra and I am just beginning to do some research into the Inserra side of my family. My father is Albert Inserra and his father is Frank Inserra. They lived in Elmhurst, Queens. My greatgrandfather, came over from Sicily to Ellis Island, and he lived in Astoria Queens. That is about all I know!! Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Kyle,

What was the name of your great grandfather and year of birth? What was the name of his wife? If he had more children, names would help. Just did a quick Inserra census search -living in Queens, and these are the names that came up...
Peter Inserra, Mildred Inserra, Thomas Inserra, Mary Inserra.

My great-grandfather's wifes name was Josephine, I am still searching for her maiden name and his DOB. I think my grandfathers siblings were Salvatore, and Theresea, and maybe..Phil (?)....I'm sorry I am just getting started and I am communicating all this info to my Aunt who might know more.

Have you tried locating the obituary for your grandparents?
The reason I present this, is that obituaries contain specific info.
I was able to find out date of birth, town of birth, parents names, siblings names, both deceased and living and even the location and date of marriage. Worth a try.....

ear Kyle I know your starting out and being needlessly bomnbarded with stuff that impedes rather than helps. Genealogy works bestr by working BACKWARDS from the USA to Italy. You do this by going to www.ellisisland.org to find the oldest ancestor in your family to tcom to the USA as an immigrant. There in the ellisisland websitre you will find the vital data you need in order to go back to Italy and find the relatives today and your ancestors dating back, usually, to 1809. Please let me know what you find out in ellisisland since if the ancesotr does not appear in that forum we have to go elsewhere. In the meantime, you may wish to buy/borrow the book Italian genealogical records by Trafford R. Cole and it is an easy read. The book will enable you to rtrace your family on your own. Peter

Yeah I've been there...I found my great grandfather and his records, I am looking for his brothers, and their families here in the US. I am also looking for ancestors in Sicily...is there a good way to go about finding over seas relatives? Or is it best still to look here first? Thanks for the insight.,

I think I came to the conclusion that he didnt come through Ellis Island. As far as I can tell, there is no record of an Albert Inserra coming in though there. I am now thinking maybe he came in through the Port of Boston. There seems to be no relation (only b/c no one in my family has even mentioned a Boston contingent!). But I am off to the bookstore today!
