Dead end on Ancestors
Dead end on Ancestors
Hello,
I seemed to have reached a dead end on my grandfather's family. He was born in Sant' Elpedio 17 April 1888 and his name was Alberto or Umberto Stortini. He had a younger brother, Pasquale, who also came to the US. His mother was Yolanda Cimadamore. His father, Raffaele, and siblings Assunta, Luigi and Giuseppe are all listed on a Manifest through Ellis Island on 5 AUG 1922, but all 4 names were crossed off, and I can find no trace of them either in the US or in Italy after that. i have searched with Ancestry.com as well as Familysearch.org, with no success.
Are records from this period available from the Sant' Elpedio area? If so, where could I access them? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Mary

If they were crossed off the manifest it means they did not sail. You need to find their incoming manifest. If you need help email lostquays@ymail.com

Re: Dead end on Ancestors
Mary,
Ditto what Italysearcher said: they didn't arrive on this ship. Most likely they sailed on a ship a few months after the SS Conte Rosso.
For further evidence, read the notes at the bottom of the manifest. Your family names are listed along with a note "did not sail". I can't read the rest of the comments (image too blurry).
Obviously your family arrived at some point in time. There are lot of possibilities as to why you can't find them:
1) Names misspelled on the manifest
2) Names incorrectly indexed
3) They are on a "missing manifest" (manifest scans are damaged, so not indexed).
I have seen each of these occur with my Italian family members.
If you have any Naturalization papers, they will list the ship and date your family member arrived.
Also, you can try searching with the One-Step Webpages by Stephen P. Morse. (go to stevemorse.org)
His search engine lets you use other criteria (say part of a city name), or with limited passenger name. For example, I found my g-g.father using C* C* for first and last names. His last name was so badly mangled in the records, Ellis Island searches weren't productive. Also, the tool will send an email with a summary of all search results (if you provide an email address).
If you still don't find your family, you can search the Ellis Island Manifests (aka Missing Manifests) in one step. This lets you identify potential ships, then go thru each ship's manifest page by page to find your relatives. It's slow and tedious, but gives you another way to find the records of interest.
Good luck!

Re: Dead end on Ancestors
I could not find my paternal grandfather on a ship manifest either. I think the page he would have appeared on was not scanned.
Anyway, if your grandfather naturalized and you know his petition number you can send an online request for records to the National Archives (NARA) http://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/.
For a $10 charge you will receive the Certificate of Acceptance, the Declaration of Intent and the Petition to Naturalize. I received pdf copies of these documents within 1 business day of sending my request!
The Certificate of Acceptance is legal evidence of your ancestor's arrival into the United States. It will indicate the date and place of arrival and the ship your ancestor arrived on. As it turned out, my grandfather traveled on a ship different from what I had been told.
If you don't have your grandfather's petition number it should be easy enough to find. Ancestry has a large collection of Petition Cards. Look first for the Petition Card there.
Good luck,
Steve

Re: Dead end on Ancestors
Thank you all very much for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the relatives who did not sail on the manifest above never arrived in America. That is the issue. There is no trace of them either in America or in Italy after that date.
Re: Dead end on Ancestors
Have you tried looking in Canada or Argentina? Those are possibilities.
Re: Dead end on Ancestors
Thank you, Bette. I have tried Canada but not Argentina. I will give it a try!

Re: Dead end on Ancestors
I found a link there for this offering, but it was for New York naturalizations -- not for naturalizations in general. If you found a general link, would you mind posting it?sacesta wrote:Anyway, if your grandfather naturalized and you know his petition number you can send an online request for records to the National Archives (NARA) http://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/.

The Declaration of Intent will also list this information, but be careful. Unlike the Certificate of Acceptance, that information is only as accurate as the immigrant's memory. My grandfather botched this one badly; he named a ship that was no longer in service in the year he gave for his immigration. (He also never became a citizen....)sacesta wrote:The Certificate of Acceptance is legal evidence of your ancestor's arrival into the United States. Still, sometimes when an immigrant doesn't get past the Declaration of Intent, and you're not sure of your ancestor's town of birth, it can be the only starting point you have.

http://www.archives.gov/research/naturalization/
Look in the upper right corner for a box with a shopping cart and text:
"Now you can order copies of naturalization records online!"
It's a link to the NARA login page here:

Good luck
