Hello Italian Friends,
I am looking for someone who can assist me in writing a letter to the state archives of palermo in response to a letter that I received from Comando Militare Autonomo Sicilia Centro Documentale di Palermo. I wrote the comando requesting my grandfather's WW1 Italian military records using a computer generated document translator, but not sure how accurate it was. I believe by the response I received the Comando does not have the records and was sending the request on to someone else.
I have never received any further info from Palermo and it has been since April. I want to send a second request to the new address that the Comando references in the letter but I honestly can't tell from the letter what it is.
Here is the response from the comando:
Oggetto: Richiesta di copia del foglio matricolare relativo al Sig. Baiardo Salvatore nato ad Altavilla Milicia il 11. 08.1888
A Ministero Per I Beni E le Attivita' Culturali
Archivio Di Stato-Ufficio Richerche
Cortile Gancia, 2 90100 Palermo
e-mail: as-pa.ufficioricerche@beniculturali.it
e, per conoscenza
(my info was here)
I would like to send the following letter as my second request
Dear sir or madam,
My name is....I am in search of the WW1 military records of my grandfather Salvatore Baiardo born 11.08.1888 in Altavilla Milicia to Giuseppe Baiardo and Laura DiFalco. We have been told that he was a prisoner of war held captive in Albania and his last living child (my father) would like to find out what happened to him during his time served.
I originally sent my request to the Comando back in April, they sent me a letter stating they were forwarding the request on to......I have not heard anything back and am kindly placing a second request for these records.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter,
Sincerely,
Translation assistance

Re: Translation assistance
Hi andieh69,
I know enough Italian to get you into trouble.
That said, have you looked into Trafford R. Cole's book: Italian Genealogical Records: How to Use Italian Civil, Ecclesiastical & Other Records in Family History Research ?
I know he provides example letters to contact other Italian government organizations.
Maybe has something to get military records.
I'll be interested if you have any success, as my GF served in the Italian army during WWI.
You don't have to buy it. Check your library's genealogy section. If they don't have that book, others I've seen recommended include:
Finding Your Italian Roots. The Complete Guide for Americans (by John Philip Colletta)
Genealogists Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors: How to Find and Record Your Unique Heritage (by Lynn Nelson)
Finding Your Italian Ancestors: A Beginner's Guide (by Suzanne Russo Adams)
Regards,
-Ken

Re: Translation assistance
Hi
I've been reading through this forum and my thinking is to just keep things simple. Here's a suggestion for you to send:
Gentilissima Signora, Gentile Signore,

If you are not exactly sure of the birth date then give a year range. I've used this letter before with good results. Do wait a day before sending it though in case my grammar is wrong or someone has a better idea.
If I'm understanding correctly, your Salvatore Baiardo may have been a POW? If he was, then the military record probably won't give you a lot of info about this. (It will mostly likely just have the date of capture and where.) These details are held by the International Redcross. You might like to do a search here: http://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Search
I did do a search myself for you, and scrolled down many names, but nothing came up for a Salvatore Baiardo or similar surname. I checked by given name as well, just in case.
