Military records, Lista de leva

Let's hope someone reading this can unscramble what is
a most curious military record in the Salerno Archives.

My great-uncle comes up in the lista de leva records on-line at

Years ago, I received both his official 1891 birth and his official 1892 death records
from the comune where he was born and also died. He lived for a grand total of 9 months.

OK, so it's a mistake. Doesn't happen often in Italian records........or does it?
Now I can only wonder about records I 'can't find.'

If male children were "registered" at birth, (contradicted by official resources) sibs of his are
"missing" in the lista. If, as references cite, males were "registered" at age 18, well, somehow
this little guy slipped into the military records.

Very curious.

Any thoughts?

My guess is that the Comune every year sends to the military district the names of the kids born that year, rather than when they turn 18, so that the district can properly plan. The Commune possibly may not send death records or they may send them and in your case the district forgot to remove your great uncle from the list. Also there is a possibility that he only appears in the list but that the summons to appear may come from a different list. Hard to tell unless one knows the procedure used at the time he was placed in the list.

If, as you write, male children when born in a particular comune were entered in records for military planning purposes, then as I pointed out in my post, brothers of the child-in-question should be in the records. They are not, or not all the known brothers are included.

Every resource I've consulted states that the males in Italy were "registered" at age 18.

Again, as I noted, this peculiar record may be a "mistake." I understand.

Which raises a far more important issue for me about relying on Italian records. The reputation Italian records have for the strictest accuracy is called into question by this particular record. How many records that I've requested are just as "misfiled" someplace and I've been told they don't exist? You see??

Which explains why I hoped to have a definitive answer about why this little guy was in a military list!

Noel, your link is not working. I did copy and paste the info supplied but your great uncle's details are not there. Are you able to give us your great uncle's details and also post copies of the birth and death certificates you have for your great uncle. Thank you. Angela

If I am understanding the above string.
My thought is that, when a child died and the parents had another child, they would name the 2nd child the same name as the child that died. Possibly, there is another birth record for your great uncle.

The military record shows the same birthday as the child. So in this case it is not a second child.
Thank you for the suggestion. This does happen when a child dies sometimes.
