We all have our methods and pick up other strategies along the way. I did use the index in this case to find Santa's birth record. I already knew from the marriage record her parents names and her approximate year of birth. I'll pull out the index in a minute for you.
In the mean time, thought you might be interested in some added info:
Here at No 53 is Vitantonio and Santa's Pubblicazione (request for publication of banns). I was hoping for some added information and there is a little.
Here it states that both Vitantonio and his father Bartolomeo were Cavamonti* (quarriers*) Bartolomeo was 53 yo and Angela Rotunno was a filatrice (seamstress/cotton spinner/worker).
Michele was a deceased contadino and Chiara Calia was also a filatrice.
Unfortunately the allegati (attachments/documents required before a marriage could proceed) for 1876 don't seem to be on line. They included the bride and groom's birth records, which was mandatory, and also Michele's death record. It says in the notes at the bottom that Chiara Calia, mother of the bride, appeared to give her consent.

Re: 2nd different death records for child named Nunzio Stella
So here she is in the town of Altamura (not Bari
) at No 156 and it's great because these indices give her parents names and then the date of birth. No 156 doesn't exactly relate to the birth record, you have to search by the date with these particular records. Basically all you are seeing here is “16” and you have to then look above to the previous entries to see in which month she was born. At No 149 I see the abbreviation for November so I know it was 16 November.
http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ewsIndex=0
This might help with the month abbreviations:
7bre = September
8bre = October
9bre = November
Xbre = December (also 10bre)
There are some really good tutorials on reading Italian records on Family Search and there was a really good tutorial here also, but I can't locate it at the minute. I need to go out shortly, so will look for it much later. (Personally, I have found IG (here) to be the best place to learn, just reading through the forums, asking questions and being proactive both in helping and asking for help

thank you so much...you are a great resource and a very sweet person! I think I figured out what I've been missing. There are actually links to births and then also a link that says birth indices, where they just have pages like the one you linked me to. But they are only there for certain years, and I had no idea how to approach searching in years that weren't in that list such as 1857 (e.g., like this http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... ti+indice/). I honestly never thought to look at the end of all the images in the birth record year. You've helped me figure it out!

You are very welcome!
Yes, the indices - well done, you have it figured. With the indices, and where they are located, they vary according to the town, and also the year. Sometimes you will find them right at the beginning of the registry year, and sometimes you will find them at the end. Recently I saw them in the middle, and possibly that was because when the records were filmed they somehow got out of order, not sure. Sometimes they also appear before the supplementary section (Part II – which is where you will find events that have occurred out of town, overseas, in hospital etc.) Sometimes they are itemised separately like some of yours. Sometimes there is absolutely no index at all.
Usually the indices are set up in alphabetical order of surname but not always. You'll find that your earlier records might be set up in alphabetical order of Christian (given) name. http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 0.jpg.html
As you go through your town you'll get to know how your own records are set up and what is peculiar to them.
To enlarge the image on the antenati site, so that you can read it clearly:
Click on the record.
Click into the corner of the black edging
Then either use the roll on your mouse to enlarge or use the + sign
From this point you can save to your computer (otherwise you don't get a good pic, it blurrs when you enlarge or disintegrates):
In the enlarged mode as above:
Right click on mouse
Click on “save to your computer”
Give it a name and click on save
(I personally don't enlarge the indices when I'm flicking through as it takes too long but I'm use to reading small/various script now.)

I don't want to overload you, so if you have any questions just ask or if you need any help locating/translating a record.

I think I found Chiara Calia's birth record...but can't make out her parents names. I think her father is Nunzio, and her mom is Angela...but can't decipher the surname.

will look next for the marriage record of Chiara and Michele Colonna to verify this is the correct Chiara.

I read Angela Cornacchia
Re: 2nd different death records for child named Nunzio Stella
So, looks like there were 2 Chiara's born to the same parents, one in 1832 and one in 1835. I found both birth records, as well as the marriage record for Michele Colonna and Chiara Calia. now having trouble reading Michele's mother's name. any assistance in decoding that would be awesome! thanks in advance.

Going good
Michele Calonna's mother was Santa Lospalluto (but it looks like Lospallata).
Sometimes if I'm not sure of the spelling I look at the indices for other similar surnames and/or use the Italian white pages:
http://www.paginebianche.it/ricerca?qs= ... v=Altamura
I'll let you look at the indices to verify
