Ancestry v. Other Genealogy sites

Post by ms_mary58 »

First, I want to say that the members of this group have been extremely helpful to me in tracing my family history. Many key questions were answered by people who donate their time to this cause, and I for one am extremely thankful.

Currently, I have a World Explorer membership with Ancestry, and I must say that I have been disappointed with it. The members seem to be primarily from the US and Canada, and, while I have discovered some clues, and even connected with an unknown 1st cousin through Ancestry DNA, there was not much new information available, and that which was available was often questionable at best. I have recently begun to transfer my tree to FamilySearch.org.

My question is, is there an ancestry type program that is actually used by people in Italy? I know there is an Italian version of Ancestry, but access to this is not included with the World Explorer membership.

Thanks for any info provided.

I use MyHeritage. I have found ancestors of my family within member trees created by site members located in Italy.

Just tried out the library edition at my local FHC and found one of the branches of my family that still lives in Sicily. The tree was created by a resident of my grandfather's home town. A very pleasant surprise! I'll have to look into the other tools that are available on the site to tell how worthwhile subscribing might be.

Helpful and Free URLs for Ancestry Research can be found on this link which is a photo gallery on my website dedicated to Ancestry research.because these are photos, not documents, you cannot click on the links. I have documents of them, but this website limits replies to only 9 URLs and there are many more than that.

Hi Mary,

I have used WorldConnect Rootsweb many times and found it to be helpful. If you use the advanced search it gives many options. I found this to be a helpful resource when doing research outside the U.S. But I will say that it has been most helpful with finding people prior to 1900. When you go that far back, there are more ancestors involved and more likely submissions form users. It also provides individual e-mails so you can reach out to others with questions.

Mary,

I have not found website specifically used by people in Italy. Of the generic (mostly USA/Canada) sites, I've tried most of them and rejected them. Ancestry.com is ridiculous....making other people (my siblings/cousins etc) pay to see the work I did! and all the trees just linked with no effort to verify accuracy--the same incorrect information just getting repeated endlessly. I tried My Heritage but after 250 people in your "FREE" tree, you have to start paying for their "Premium" service.

I got into this to learn and to share--NOT to have an albatross of a monthly bill year after year

I ended up at https://www.wikitree.com about 5 or 6 years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. It is clunky to navigate at first but it has really served me well with making connections to many family members both here and abroad. The profiles created are google-searchable (word ? ) world-wide AND interested people who click on the item DON'T get some pop-up saying PAY TO SEE MORE.......

My FamilyTreemaker 2017 genealogy software by MacKiev is now giving me both Ancestry.com hints (green leaf by person) and also FamilySearch.org hints (blue box by person). So I can more quickly see if people I want to research and also people related to them have hints without inquiring each time on Family Search and then netting down to my person from dozens or hundreds of hints. Plus I can see both Ancestry and Family Search hints together in one place, instead of two separate places.
