Biological father & DNA

Biological father & DNA

Post by campcantreg »

My husband took the Ancestry.com DNA test to determine his biological father. So far closest matches are to 4th cousins with family tree surnames and locations that connect to his baptismal Godfather- close to 60 years ago. His presumed biological father now long deceased. No other known living family members. Does the search now end at the 4th cousin range for Ancestry.com DNA matches? :(

Not at all. There are people taking the test all the time and people usually get new matches all through the year. You can also put his results on Gedmatch.com for free and get another round of matches there - some will be from Ancestry and some will be from other companies. Also Family Tree DNA accepts transfers of Ancestry raw data.

So his baptismal godfather was a relative too? Was that his mother's side?

Also when you say "presumed" bio father do you have a name but are trying to prove it through DNA?

You should consider joining the closed group DNA Detectives on Facebook where you can ask questions and people will help you to understand the data and how to make it work for you.

Magsworld, you have been very helpful! We will be hopeful that we will get closer matches in the future as more people take the test.

We did not know about Gedmatch.com nor Family tree. DNA.

The presumed biological father is my husband’s baptismal Godfather. He never knew they were related. His Godparents were very close, good friends of the family-not relatives. Ancestry.com DNA matches to individuals in the extended family of his Godfather with familiar surnames -this is why there is a such a strong indication he may be the biological father. Unfortunately since his Godfather is long deceased -we can no longer get a DNA test. Unaware of any living members.
