Immigration to Uruguay

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Immigration to Uruguay

Post by swheeeler »

My great grandfather immigrated to Uruguay from Italy. All I know is his name was Santiago Fassio and he lived in Montevideo. I do not know from what part of Italy he came. Are there any emigration/immigration records I can search?

A little information here. Do you know his wife's and/or children's names. His approx. birth year?

Enter Santiago into first name Fassio into surname, and, Uruguay into the residence field

I have looked on family search. They do not have a lot of information from Uruguay. I also do not know which Santiago Fassio he is since I have very little information. I know that his daughter is Julia Fassio. Santiago's first wife died (and a child) in a fire. He remarried. I do not know anything about that marriage. Also, I understand that a lot of documents were lost at the time.

His name in Italian wouldn't have been Santiago but an Italian first name. I'm not sure what that might have been. Perhaps, someone else can give some input on this. The following shows a heavy concentration of the Fassio surname in Northern Italy in the Piemonte, Liguria, Lombardi and Valle d'Aosta regions.
