Hi there, and welcome to the forum :)

A clearer copy would be helpful. I think that you are going to have problems though, if you are requring this for citizenship purposes? This is because there are no parents mentioned on this birth certificate. The midwife has declared the birth and said that the baby was born to a woman who did not wish to be named. I also wonder whether you are required to have the translation certified? I don't really know anything about applying for citizenship so I may have this incorrect. There are lots of really knowledgeable people on this site who know about these matters who will be able to help you through this.

Edit to add: If you haven't already seen this forum here, you might find it helpful to read through or post on: https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/emigration

This is great, much better. :) I think that it would be really good if someone could type up the Italian handwritten section. Hopefully, someone will translate it to English for you. I'll have a look at it later if no one has time to do it before then. I don't translate verbatimly and I'm not sure what is actually required for "citizenship" purposes.

I've made a start but it's far from perfect. (I hope that things ended well for this child.)

Birth Record: Giuseppe Cesare
Altavilla Irpina: 9 December 1896, 11.10 am
Before Fortunato Bruno, the Mayor of Altavilla Irpina, appeared Angela Maria Martino, 46 yo, levatrice (midwife), who lived in Altavilla. She reported that at the hour 1 am on 9 December 1896, in the house in Strada Orticello (no number is given), from a woman who did not give consent to be named, was born a baby of the male gender who she did not present to the Mayor, and who was given the name Giuseppe Cesare.

Present, as witnesses to the Act were Giuseppe Severino, 39, ….? and Costantino Marinelli, 23, scrivano (clerk), who both resided in this town.

The rest I'm struggling with but someone else will fill in the gaps:

After being assured of the truth of the birth, the declarant was given a dispensation from the Mayor, from presenting the baby.

I'm not sure of all the words in the last paragaph but what I understand is that it says that “the same declarant declared that she had attended the childbirth and that the child …. ? it doesn't quite make sense to me but it has something to do with the Hospice (Ospizio) of Avellino and the Director of the Hospice …... Hopefully someone else will know the words I can't decipher and fill in the gaps.

Then the last sentence just says that the Act was read to everyone present, all have signed except the declarant who asserted that she was unable to write.

All the best with your endeavours to seek citizenship.

You are very welcome. It's really annoying me that I can't decipher and understand all the words to help more. Our native speakers of Italian will sign in soon and they'll be able to give a more accurate interpretation of what the Act says.

So when you say "Puzzling info" what do you mean? If you are wondering about the "hospice" I'm not sure that it has the same connotations that it does today - ie a place for palliative care, although a lot of foundlings did die as babes in these places. I know from other records that I've come across that in Avellino there was a place known as "Ospizio degli esposti" (translates to hospice of the exposed – in other words a place for foundlings or the abandoned, as I understand it). It seems like he was maybe placed there?

Anyway, we'll keep hopeful for more pieces to the puzzle.

@Angela

Giuseppe Severino

This is great. Thank you so much for typing up the complete Act. :)

So, focussing on the sentence that I was having difficulty with:

“La stessa dichiarante avendomi dichiarato di avere assistito al parto, il detto bambino viene da me inviato all'Ospizio di Avellino al mezzo della medesima dichiarante di ciò incaricata al quale rimetto una copia del presente atto, perché si consegna al Direttore dell'Ospizio assieme al bambino.”

This is what I understand:

The same declarant, (Angela Maria Martino), declared that she had attended the birth.
The baby was sent, (by who – the Mayor?), to the Hospice of Avellino, (via the declarant?), along with a copy of the Birth Act. Both the baby and the Birth Act were delivered to the Hospice Director.

Correct???

One other thing: Where it says "e a cui da i nomi di Giuseppe Cesare” - doesn't this mean that the child was given two "given" names, and that no surname is mentioned, or was Cesare intended to be the invented surname?
[/quote]

As always, thank you for your help.

Thank you, mmogno. So I basically did understand that long sentence, which is reassuring. For some reason i got stuck on the phrase "viene da me" which I know literally means "comes from me", and some how it didn't sound right to me. Thank you once again, for your help. I'm sure it will help the poster as well.

Verdi_6:

Hi there

Just a couple of things:

Giuseppe Severino's occupation was “usciere” (usher/door keeper)

Re the Italian transcription that mmogno has typed here – if you use google translate, it will not translate properly and won't make sense and may also negate or give a different meaning to something I've said. I'm confident that I have interpreted correctl,y and mmogno has also read through it – both his Italian and English are impeccable - and he would've noted anything that I may have tripped up on.
