Italian Wedding Parties in the 1920s in the US

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Italian Wedding Parties in the 1920s in the US

Post by rp76226 »

I have three photos of relative wedding party photos from 1920 and 1924. In all of them, which were quite formal, there was the groom and best man - the only men in the photo, and the rest of the wedding party was all women (up to 9 women) plus the flower girl and ring boy. Was that typical then? Today's weddings have a male usher for each bridesmaid.

In his book, "Italian Genealogical Records, How to Use Italian Civil, Ecclesiastical, and Other Records in Family History Research," by Trafford R. Cole, Ancestry Incorporated, 1995, Trafford Cole wrote an interesting section about a wedding in Italy page 58. He said," The bride's family is responsible for the marriage, the flowers, the reception and the pranzo nuziale, or wedding dinner." He further said, "Usually, the bride's family and guests are invited to her home and the grooms guests to his home for refreshments. They then accompany the bride and groom to the church for the wedding ceremony. After the wedding the family and special guests attend a banquet that starts at noon and continues all afternoon and evening...." You may want to get his book and read more of what he wrote. I hope this helps your quest.
