I ran across this Forum in trying to locate information about my grandparents (father side) who cam from Italy and arrived here 3/26/1907. I use the Liberty-Ellis Island database and found both records (although my grandmothers name was misspelled but I spent hours combing the manifests and found her).
My Aunt (now gone) mentioned to my Dad that their parents met on a ship and were married along the way (on the sea). Liberty data shows they arrived on different ships yet the same day 3/26/1907 (to NYC), and both indicated on the manifest that they were married. Oddly my grandfathers ship left 8 days (3/5/1907) before my grandmother's ship (3/13/1907). Both left from Naples, Italy. Rumor (from Aunt) is that his ship had engine trouble and all passengers transferred to my grandmothers ship but I can find no record of that in each of the manifests.
I do find it odd they both arrived the same day and said they were married although a Declaration of Intention to Naturalize filed in later years by my grandfather said they married in Providence, RI in 1908 (they both had family there but settled in Hartford, CT). There is no record of their marriage in RI State records however (and neither ever naturalized). I am checking with the Catholic church.
Anyway, wondering if there may be a record of marriages performed on board these ships, or even if that sounds feasible?
Or any other tips..... appreciated!
Thx
