Italian Detto or clan name

Post by tapeduzzi »

I have been researching my family in Italy and my name is common in Schignano. The Peduzzi's have Detto's identifying different families. When do these families get that detto and when does it change or is that the only detto that family will have. Does that mean that a particular detto identifies those of that name that you are related to or can you be related to other Peduzzi's with a different detto? Thanks for your assistance. Teresa

I'd have to see an example from the documents you are looking at to confirm this, but I believe "detto" should be read as the English "ditto", "same as above", or "the aforementioned.
