This is amazing! SO THEY DID GO TO BRAZIL! I bet Michele was born there!

I tried to translate "Spedale" for 2-4 hours today, literally. Printed out the document, cropped it, changed lighting to bring out the ink better.. You are very talented!

That makes total sense that it's hospital. I had translated it to "Of the daughters of Lucca", and "of the flower garden of Lucca". I am going to look over it again, and see how you saw the S in that. The best I could come up with was Cf, or H, but I would never have guessed it to be S.

P.S - Would you mind giving me specifics on how you accessed those documents through http://www.inci.org.br/? I am going to go through that site right now, and try and figure out how to access the microfilm so that I can search those documents. Really great of you for finding the information. I would never have known how to find that site.

From speaking with one of my great aunt's she said that the Cari family moved to Brazil, wasn't satisfied there, and came back to Italy right before they moved to the USA. Not exactly sure the time frame, but from what she had said it happened before they came to the USA.

I wonder if Michele is a foundling? The only things that come to mind to explain us being unable to locate Michele is that

1- He was a foundling
2- He wasn't born in Lucca
3- He might possibly be one of the Giusti's children, and Anselmo and Annunziata were smuggling him into the USA for another family.

I will have to spend some time going through the back of the Nati books to see if there is any indication of him. I was doing some research on foundlings, and from what I read in the back of the books is where they assign children that were abandoned.


Side Note - On Anselmo and Annunziatas Marriage paper work where it lists Anselmos father it read something like "Dello Spedale di Lucca".

I am curious if the word is Haole? It looks to read either Cfuole, Cfuale, Huole, ?)

On another set of marriage bans it looks to read "aeli Aspecua" ? I am unsure what the letters are.

I have printed of versions of old Italian handwriting, and am currently attempting to decypher the words letter by letter, and then translating it into English.
The hardest part for me is that I do not speak Italian. I would be unable to identify words that are either lost in translation, or combinations of words that change the means of two words into another word / sentence.

I still have a very long way to go in unraveling this mystery, but I am very glad that you have been able to help me!

This is truly one of the hardest things that I have ever done.

Just a couple of things as I need to go out shortly.

Anselmo was the "son of the Hospital of Lucca". You may have missed my translation of their "original" marriage record. I suggest you go back and take a look, it's highlighted in blue. I think that it would be really good if you have his birth/baptism extract translated as well:

I spent some time yesterday looking at different records pertaining to Michele and they all said the same thing, that he was born in California, US 2 April 1900. I don't know whether you have tried looking for a US birth record for him? I'm not from the US so I'm not sure what the procedure might be there for doing this. There are plenty of talented people here on the forum who could help with this.

Thanks mmogno! After writing that reply I went to the site, and figured it out for myself!

I am currently going through nacimento indicies checking to see if Michele is listed in them, but I may switch to Genoa shipping papers to see exactly when the Cari family came back to Italy from Brazil.

P.S- Angela, all of the sons (Serafino, Grisostomo, Michele) with the exception of Nello all claim to have been born in the USA. On mostly all of the census data, military registration cards, etc.

I would also like to add that I haven't posted the documents for translation, because I am attempting to learn how to translate them myself.

The reason that I am posting is this is so that you know that I do appreciate your help, and also so that you know that I am not trying to put all of the work onto you. This entire process is going to take several years to complete.

The way that I see it if I can learn how to translate, then as I request documents from Italy, translate them, gather the information from them, and then request additional documents that I continue the cycle until there are no more documents to request.
