Translation of marriage record

Post by vcutrie »

I would appreciate any help in translating the marriage of my ggg grandparents, Giuseppe Cutri and Antonia Portolesi. In particular, I am trying to make out if any father is listed for Giuseppe. His mother is listed as Caterina. Thank you in advance for any help.

Aug 24th, 1809
Marriage of Giuseppe Cutrì, 25 years old, labourer, son of unknown father and Caterina Cutrì, living in Platì, and
Antonia Portolesi Bortolesi, 18 yo, living in Platì, daughter of Francesco Portolesi and Giuseppa Alfaroni.

Of course, "unknown father" doesn't necessarily mean that father was actually unknown; for instance, he might have been an already married man, who could not recognize the child.

Thank you so much! Do you have any suggestions on finding out the possible father of Giuseppe? Is it likely from this record that he was an illegitimate child and adopted the mother Caterina's surname?

If he died with the same surname, it is likely that he was never legitimated.
You might try with a possible marriage for Caterina, but you'll never be sure
