I haven't been paid for my consulting work in Italy

Post by ferrara »

I know this isn't a business law forum, but I didn't really know where else to ask! :D

I did several weeks of intensive consulting work in April in Milan, and the agreement was that I would be paid in full at the end of the month (April). It is now July and I haven't been paid. It is taking forever. There always seems to be some little "snag" that is preventing me from getting paid.

As an American (no dual citizenship), what are my rights and how might I approach the situation in terms of demanding payment and what manner of recourse should I take if I am not paid in a reasonable time? The sum is a substantial amount of money.

Thank you,
J

Did you have a work permit while you were doing consulting work in Italy? If not, you were working illegally. People who work illegally in the USA can also find it difficult to get paid and they have no recourse. I know of an Italian who entered the USA with a set of metric tools in his luggage. Customs took one look at them and put him on the next flight back to Italy no questions asked.

They're pretty good about this kind of stuff in northern Italy so I'm really surprised you've had issues in Milan. Did you sort it out by now, Ferrara?
