Name?

Post by jml1991 »

Hi all,
I am a bit puzzled by the name "Danei", the father of Antonino di Rao, in the 1621 marriage record below, as I have not seen it before. Would the Italian equivalent be "Daniele"?
Thank you!

This is a transcription of the original 1621 record.
I've never heard such a name ("Daneo"). Maybe the person who transcribed it misread the original.

Thank you, PippoM! So sorry for delayed reply. Yes, you are correct re the transcription. Many of the very old church records from Prizzi were transcribed in the early 1900s by a priest, perhaps because they were becoming unreadable. Unfortunately, though the transcribed records are available online, many of the original records are not, as is the case with this one. On those occasions when I have been able to compare transcribed records with the original, I have found the transcriptions to be very accurate, but there is always the possibility that an original is so damaged that it is nearly impossible to read, which may have been the case with this one.
Thanks again for your help!
