6. Baptism Certificate of Francesco Gio Battista Mazzaccheri

Re: Fraschetti family
Angela , thank you so much for the translation. Am I wrong to assume that the name of the bride was given to her by the hospital? Or did her parents give her this name and abandoned her at the hospital?I realize that you wouldn’t know in this particular matter, but as a matter of course would such a hospital name the children left there?
Thank you again,
Diane

Re: Fraschetti family
You are very welcome Diane.
What I understand is, that normally, when a child is left at a hospital or foundling home, that the baby is then taken to the Mayor of the town to be registered, and it is up to the Official (usually the Mayor) to name the child. Normally, he would give the child a surname that is not in any way associated with the town, and he basically also makes up a Christian name for the baby. (My thinking is that because no actual birth date seems to be recorded in the baptism certificate, that I can see, that when Eduarda was left at the hospital, she "may" have been a few days old already.) The baby then would've been taken to the Town Hall to be registered and promptly baptised at the local Cathedral.
It might be a good idea to write to the town of Prato and ask for the 1855 Birth Record, just to see what it says. Sometimes, if a mother wants to later reclaim her child, she might leave a little medal with the child, or an item of cloth, ribbon, letter or something else. This would be recorded in the Birth Record in case the mother later finds herself in a position to raise the child. Sadly, I doubt very much that this was the case in this situation though.
Maybe someone else will take a look through the allegati and see something that I'm missing. It seems to me that she remained a child of the Hospital but I'm not exactly sure what that means. (Possibly it was also an orphanage???)

Re: Fraschetti family
Angela, again thank you for answering so promptly. I was sure that possibly she was named by an official because my great grandfather was also a foundling. The mayor or his delegate named him, so that is as far as we can go in tracing our roots. I tell my sister that when we get to heaven , all these relatives that we make assumptions about, will be wagging their finger at us and tell us the real story. Have a good week and thanks again.

Re: Fraschetti family
Obviously "Gettatelli" is another word for foundling. So it must come from the verb "gettare" meaning to throw, to throw away, throw out etc.

Sì, esattamente
Gettatelli
Il termine deriva dal latino iactatum e significa appunto gettato via. Con tale significato erano indicati anche i bambini abbandonati che, quasi contro natura, venivano gettati dai loro genitori alla pubblica assistenza.

Grazie. I knew the word "Getta" because it came up sometimes when I was growing up, but thought it was probably one of our dialect words. Then I eventually found the verb in the dictionary and worked it out. (I get a bit mixed sometimes between two dialects and pure Italian.)

Absolutely. It's a horrible. If it had to be, I would much prefer Innocenti, which is who these precious children were.
Because I mainly translate Southern Records, I'd not seen "Gettatelli" before. Is the term used more in the Central and Northern records of Italia?
