Anna Legio or Liggio Corleone, Sicily

Post by khoney »

Anna’s last name is consistently spelled differently in the church records than in the civil records. I know the first name in church records is written in Latin but have not come across the last name being changed before. Is this the common practice? Below are examples.

Certificati Di Defissione Anna Legio and Birth Anna Legio https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2051639

Birth of son Nicoli Colletto Number 58 Anna Legio https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2051639

Baptism of same son Number 51 Anna Leggio
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2046915

Son's Death record church Anna Leggio number 29 Anna Leggio https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2046915

Son's Death civil record number 28 Anna Legio https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=2051639

Also, is the Certificati Di Defissione the same as Processetti?

Thank you,
Karen

Yes, that happens!.
Priests sometimes tried to "latinize" surnames...
That "Certificato di defissione" is part of the Processetti (though I'd never heard of such certificate called that way).
"Processetti" or "Allegati" is the whole folder of documents provided for the marriage.
The "Certificato di defissione" is a paper that confirms that banns have been kept of the wall of the Town Hall (or of the Church) for a number of days, and that noboby opposed marriage.
("Affiggere" is "to post"; "defiggere" (maybe used at that time) must be "unpost")

Interesting side note, this same transcription error happened somewhat famously. Lucciano Leggio was an infamous mafia boss from Corleone, and his birth records and all his parents records reflect the Leggio surname. In one of his prosecutions in Corleone in the 1950s he was incorrectly recorded as Lucciano Liggio, and was generally known as Liggio the rest of his life. Leggio is a surname that is found in Sicily and in other parts of Italy, while Liggio is purely Sicilian. Both surnames appear in Corleone.
