Has anyone ever written a Consulate for records?

Post by anzuena »

Hi -

My great grandfather Pomponio Mariani was a foundling, but was acknowledged in February 1904 when his father Nicolamaria Anzuino visited the Consulate in Montreal to officially recognize him. Word was sent to Gambatesa, where in March of 1904 Nicolamaria's wife, Maria Incoronata Colavita, presented an official copy of this act of recognition to be entered into Gambatesan records.

Ann Tatangelo's blog as been instrumental in my understanding the circumstances regarding foundlings - and help from @mmogno @erudita74 enabled me to find the actual record in Gambatesa's 1904 book of births.

Naturally, the exact part of the document that describes the circumstances and the parties involved - the crux of the story I want to learn - is unreadable due to water damage.

I'm wondering if the Consulate in Montreal may have a copy of the original record made at Nicolomaria's in-person appearance, and if so, how to respectfully write to request it. Many thanks -

Joe

It is a pretty old record for them to have on file, but it won't hurt to send an email to the stato civile office at the consulate and ask.

Try: Ufficio Stato Civile/Anagrafe
montreal.demografici@esteri.it
+1 514 849-8351 (int. 232)

And a link to the page: https://consmontreal.esteri.it/consolat ... gli_uffici

Thank you, Terra.

I've just written that address, and will update this post if I receive a reply. Regardless of the outcome, thank you for taking the time to help me.

There are two other possible ways to procure the act of recognition sent by the Montreal consulate.

1) The original should have been included in the volume of attachements to the birth records of Gambatesa for the year 1904. ("Eseguita la trascrizione ho munito del mio visto ed inserta la copia suddetta nel volume degli allegati a questo registro.")
2) The civil status registers are drafted in two copies. The copy on line, damaged, is that of the State Archives of Campobasso. The other copy must be kept by the Comune of Gambatesa.
This could be fully readable.

For both of these possibilities you could write to the Comune of Gambatesa.

Marty - thanks for your reply. The record you found is the one that started the whole search, and that note is how mmogno and erudita74 told me where to find the 1904 record that's been damaged by water.

As to what I want with it - I will likely pursue citizenship but think I can make proof without this particular bit of text. For this text, I really just want to better understand these men. I'd like to know more of what actually happened and maybe (a longshot I know) understand a little of the relationship between father and son.

On one hand, family lore is that Giuseppe's dad "offered to help him in the US" and that Giuseppe wasn't interested. There are no Nicks in our family, and my grandfather was named after Giuseppe's father in law, so it seems like no love lost for Giuseppe for his father.

Yet on the other there's Nicolamaria, getting to the Consul in Montreal, sending his wife to town hall in Gambatesa to document an illegitimate son that she may or may not have known about, and in December of that year crossing the border from Canada with the stated intention to see his son Giuseppe. We don't know if that meeting happened, or if so how it went -- but it seems like the man was trying very hard to do right, late as that might be. I know it's unlikely, but I'm curious if these lost few sentences detail Nicolamaria's feeling about it at that time, or perhaps some of the other people involved so I can learn more.

Thank you for this, mmogno, again you're here with tremendously helpful information! I didn't know there were two copies and that's fantastic news as this may still be readable. I will write Mr. Vezza to ask. Thank you again for your help!
