I think it could be Salerno.
Researching Gibellina, Sicily surnames Bivona, Bonafede, Zummo, Ponzio, Bevinetto, Beninati, Fontana, Cipolla, Bruno, Manfrè, Lanfranca, and Navarra

Salcone is another possibility. Not sure whether it is found in Lucera but it is definitely a name in the province.

Thanks, both of you! There was an influx of Salerno's into Casalvecchio in the late 1800's-- so that is where I'll start. I feel better about spending search time after both of you at least see SAL to start the name.

There was another 'newish' surname from a little earlier: SABINO....does that fit for what you see at all?

I'd also wondered whether it may have been a "b" and noted down "Saboni". The other names I thought of were Saloni and Salone????

My best is Salcone.

Yes!!! I believe you are correct, G. It does look like the name starts with an "F". I wasn't actually convinced that it started with an "S" and can't believe I didn't read it as an "F" before.

Falcone actually makes sense. That family name is very well represented in this area. Falcone's from Casalnuovo Monterotaro to Roseto Valfortore have been noted in the Casalvecchio records. This was a late-in-life 2nd marriage for Catarina Fratta (likely for Nicola as well). I suspect all of her children would be with her first husband Nicolandrea Rossacci, but I was frustrated at not even being able to read that name!

I appreciate all of y'all's help!
