Need translation of Italian phrase of endearment from grandmother to grandson

Post by GeneTree »

My wife's paternal grandmother, Angelina, pinched her grandson's (my wife's brother) Camille's cheek and said, "Come sei bella ciccia tu." Camille was age 16 when Angelina came to attend her granddaughter's (my wife's) wedding.

I interviewed Camille a week ago which is how I got the story. Camille said he heard grandma say, "Como se bella chi-chi pu." I used Google Translate to help me eventually figure-out how to probably spell what she said. Camille listened to the Italian pronunciation on Google Translate and said, "That's it. That's what she said." Google Translate gave the English translation as "How beautiful you are."

My wife also listened to the Google pronunciation and said, "I wonder how she felt when she said that." And almost immediately remembered that her brother, Camille, was named after grandma Angelina's son, Camillo (1914-1928)who died when he was age 14 very close in age to Camille at our wedding.

Does my Italian spelling sound reasonable? I can't figure out how "ciccia" (chubby) fits in. Does it need to be somewhere in the translation or is it an untranslated word of endearment?

As he was a male, she probably said "Come sei bello ciccio tu". Well, I'd translate "How wonderfully chubby you are!", though the Italian sentence is much fuller of affection
