Help reading my Grandmother's Birth certificate please?

Post by Mdelio »

Hello, and thanks to all who are so graciously helping people to piece together their family stories.

I'm hoping someone can help me as well. My grandmother Anna's birth certificate is attached, and can also be viewed at this link in my Gdrive https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jmzLvy ... sp=sharing

I remember her well, she spoke no english at all though so our conversations were very limited. The handwriting on the certificate is beautiful, but as hard as I squint at it I cannot figure out what it is saying. I am especially interested in the town name, Anna's parents names (Luigi and Maria?) and the information about them (the town, what follows my great-grandmother's name...).

Thank you so much for any help you can give.
Michelle

Hi Michelle

Welcome to the forum! Sorry for the late reply - there were a few issues with the forum early in the month, and your request here was possibly overlooked.

Birth No 22: Anna Conte

Castellammare di Stabia, Napoli (Naples): 4 January 1885, 8.30 am

Before the Official appeared:

Luigi Conte, son of the deceased Giuseppe (Conte), 32 yo, Sailor, living Castellammare, who reported that at 2.15 am, on 2 January 1885, in the house in Via Cantiere, no number given, from his wife, Maria Concetta Pietropaolo faleatello???, 32 yo, housewife, was born a baby girl who he presented and named Anna.

I don't think that the record you have supplied, and I have translated above, is your grandmother. The following is a death record for an Anna Conte who I believe to be the same child:

Death No 399: Anna Conte
Anna Maria Conte died in Castellammare di Stabia on 28 July 1885, in the house in Via Cantiere, 7 months old, born and residing Castellammare, daughter of Luigi, a sailor, and Maria Pietro Paolo, housewife, both living Castellammare.

Where did you get this cropped birth record from? It seems like you are possibly not absolutely sure of your Anna Conte's place of birth? Is that right?

What I suggest you do is give us as much information as you can about your grandmother, Anna Conte. When did she immigrate and where to? When and where did she die? What was your grandfather's name? When/where did they marry, etc. We really need to work backwards from any "solid" info that you have about her, so that we can establish her place of birth, parents names etc. You could maybe post the information on the open forum here, where it will get more exposure.

Best to you.

Thanks for the backup, Livio. The writing was a bit tricky, but I can see it clearly now.

A very belated thank you to you both - as noted, this post was delayed and I stopped checking the topic. I agree that this birth certificate is unlikely to be my grandmother's - it came up as a possible match during a genealogy search. I just wanted to let you both know I appreciate your help!

You are very welcome for the help. Thank you for letting us know that you have seen it. All the best with finding your grandmother's record.
