1896 illegitimate birth, father named, but not mother

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

1896 illegitimate birth, father named, but not mother

Post by lyn1982 »

Does anyone have any idea why a fathers name would be mentioned on a birth record, but not the mother? For example, the father presents the child and declares him as his own along with when and where he was born, yet states that the child was born of his union with an unmarried woman. Child is also given the fathers surname. What would be the most likely scenero in this case? The father was 34 years old at the time and it was in 1896 in Monte San Giovanni Campano.

It's likely that they only married in Church as, at that time, the Pope exorted people not to recognize the power of the Kingdom of Italy. So, as the cxouple were not offically married, they could not recognize a child.

Thank you for the reply,

I hope this is the reason. The father, Domeneco has another child less than 2 years later with his wife. I looked in the 2 years in between this and the birth of the 2nd child and could find no marriage record. I am sure it is the same Domenico as age is a year older on the record and one of the witnesses to the birth is even the same.
