I hope to send a message to the scholar Orazio Cancila, who is from my ancestors' home town of Castelbuono. This is a first contact for him.

Professor Cancila,

  Please forgive that I do not know the Italian language, and must rely on translations of one sort or another.

  My grandmother, Anna Bertola, was born in Castelbuono in 1885; she emigrated to the USA, where she married my grandfather Antonio Gambino (born in Tommaso Natale).  For the remainder of her life they lived in New York City, where I was born in 1951 (borough of "The Bronx").  We are not connected to the mafia.  My mother's family was from Russia (now Belarus).

  I had been interested in family history but did not have an opportunity to do serious research until 2016, when I retired from my career as a secondary school teacher.  In 2017 I traveled with my wife, and two children and their spouses, to visit Sicily.  I had located some cousins in Castelbuono, and we joined with them for several days.  It was a most profound experience for me.  You may enjoy watching a video about this, created by my son Jacob (https://vimeo.com/244568873).

  I was poorly prepared to continue genealogical research during our short visit to Sicily, and have not been in good contact with my Castelbuono relatives since then.  Also, for several years I have been busy researching other branches of my own and my wife's family.  Now I return to focus on Castelbuono, and I have read only a few brief passages from your works (one paragraph at a time using Google translate, a very tedious process).

  I hope that you will be interested to correspond with me.  I would like to return to Castelbuono some day, and it would be an honor to meet with you, but these days travel is impossible and it is hard to predict the future.  In my research I have discovered a number of Castelbuono family names (in addition to Bertola) of my ancestors: Cusimano, Carollo, Norata (= Onorata), Mazzola, Barreca.  From what I understand, there are two names that I share with you: Botta and Majorana (I believe this is a variant of "Martorana").  So it is possible that we are cousins.
