Name that notation! (Archivio di Stato di Salerno)

Post by A_Franza »

Hello! I’m researching my boyfriend’s Italian ancestors and I came across an odd notation in the 1866-1895 Archivio di Stato di Salerno (State Civile Italiano), Cava de’ Tirreni, MATRIMONI Indici Trentennali (immagine #14 and immagine #125)

In the column marked “Numero del Registro,” the entry for both Teresa Avagliano (immagine #14) and Felice Antonio Siani (immagine #125) shows a “6p2” or “662.” Could this “p” actually be a stylish “s”? What does this notation mean? Where might I locate this couple’s 1878 marriage certificate?

If you bounce back (or forward) a page or two, you’ll see more entries with a similar notation.

I’d be happy to provide the additional info I have on this couple, name of parents and known children. I believe this couple adopted Matteo Ponticelli (2/4/1879) in Cava de’Tirreni, and later had five biological children – possibly more.

Matteo’s birth certificate shows “ignoti genitori”, but I found this entry in the Lista de Leva, showing Felice Antonio Siani and Teresa Avagliano as “allev. da” and I’m thinking this means they’re his adopted parents, but I don’t know for certain.

Lastly, the entry (#84) directly after Matteo’s birth certificate (#83) is for a baby girl, also listed as an “ignoti genitori” and given the name Rafaella Vezza. They’re both listed 2/4/1879, but I know this doesn’t mean they’re twin boy/girl – perhaps they were just documented at Via Comizi on the same day. If you can spot a DOB on these two birth certificates, please advise - otherwise I've been using 2/4/1879 in my notes.

Anyway, I’m most interested in finding out what “6p2” means in the Stato Civille Italiano records as it pertains to the marriage of Felice Siani and Teresa Avagliano.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

1) #6 part II (second part of the registry)
2) "allevato da" = "raised by" (not a formal adoption).
3) As to the fact that a baby girl was born in the same place and date, maybe it was the address of a hospital where women could give birth to children without recognizing them, or just where the "wheel" was placed (in this case, it would not be exact to say they "were born" there)

THANK YOU, Pippo! Yes, "part II" seems like the correct notation for sure. Any idea of where/how I can find the second part of the matrimoni registry for 1878 within Archivio di Stato di Salerno?

This is all I've found for that particular year.

Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I didn't see that Siani/Avagliano entry listed in the index for the 1878 file, so I assumed it was included in a supplement or "suppl" file that may not be available. I'd still be looking for it if you hadn't taken the time to respond.

Much appreciated!
