I'm starting from scratch here trying to figure out what this piece is. It appears t be some sort of family badge or personal identification. From what I can guess, the badge has the name of the person, where he/she is from, birth date, and that he/she was born in Sandonato, province of Caserta. Anyone else have any other opinions? Was this a tradition or customary thing back then? Thank you for any assistance!

In my opinion this badge had been commissioned by concerned parents, fearful that their child could get lost in an unfamiliar part of town. Since the child might have been unable to tell his home address or his own name, the badge provided additional security.
Please note that the city of San Donato to which the badge refers as the kid's birthplace is not the frazione of the city of Carinola (CE), but more likely the actual city of San Donato Val di Comino (FR) which, after the Italian unification, belonged to the Province of Caserta from 1882 to 1927.
