TV Subtitles

Post by darkerhorse »

I heard not that long ago TV in mainland Italy still used to run sub-titles for interviews with Sicilians because viewers couldn't always understand what was being said.

Does anyone know whether that's true or just a myth?

I'm not sure if that's the case on TV, but there are Sicilian language films from the mid 1900s that had Italian subtitles for that reason. La Terra Trema, for example. The 2009 film Baarìa was done in Sicilian language. It doesn't have subtitles, but there is a version dubbed into Italian for release there.

I think I also heard they put subtitles on news reports from the island.

It seems they added a voice-over narration in Italian, rather than dubbing all the dialogue.

Yes, it sometimes happens for programs recorded in the street, when people are not "talking to TV"; that happens for Sicily, but for Naples and surroundings, too. Also, as a different case, "Gomorra" had Italian subtitles for dialogues in dialect.

I've seen subtitles for Southerners speaking in the US sometimes.
