February 4, 1871 at 4:00 p.m. at the town hall in Orsogna appeared

Nicolò-Saverio della Penna, age 21, an unmarried man, a farmer, born and domiciled in Orsogna, son of Luigi della Penna and Camilla d’Alleva, both farmers who are residents of Orsogna, and

Concezia Damiano, age 22, unmarried, farmer, born and domiciled in Orsogna, daughter of deceased Filippo Damiano, in life a butcher and resident of Orsogna, and of Maddalena d’Angelo, a farmer who is a resident of Orsogna

who requested to be united in marriage. All documents having been filed, the spouses took their vows before witnesses Antonio Ciancio, age 50, landowner, and Domenico Ceccarossi, age 32, vendor, both residents of this comune. The documents presented included certification of the publications of intent, first on January 15 and second on January 22.

The act read to the participants, only the witnesses signed because the spouses do not know how to write.

Thank you for that translation. I would never have been able to translate it the way it was written.

Question: What is the proper way to write di Benedetto or Di Benedetto? D'Angelo or d'Angelo? You see it written both ways.

I'm not sure there is a "correct" way. Names are spelled how they are spelled. Most of the records in I recall in your Orsogna translations seem to be "di Benedetto" and "d'Angelo". Originally like in English names like Johnson and Robertson, this referred to the father. Centuries ago someone named Francesco di Benedetto might have been Francesco, son of Benedetto, and in that context the lower case d would certainly have been the correct usage. As surnames became more fixed, spelling could have been fixed either way. In modern U.S. I think most Italian Americans go with the capital D on names like that, which fits the normal surname pattern here.
