I've been trying to help some friends out with some records and came across this one for one of their grandfathers. It is above my skill level and need some help interpreting a few things:
#1 what is the name of Nicola Giovanni Carmino Tedesco's father, Nicola's (56 y o) deceased father??--can't quite get a handle on it....
#2 what exactly is the complete translation of the text where the mother 'should' be?---we've got the gist, but any additional detail may be helpful in further research.....
#3 side note and lower portion of the record's text do not appear to add anything relevant---or am I missing some important clue?

Thanks for any insights!

Re: Nicola Tedesco Birth Act
It's the birth act of Nicola Giovanni Carmino Tedesco, born 29/8/1894 in Giffoni Valle Piana.
The birth was decleared by his father, Nicola Tedesco (56 yo), fu Giosuè (= son of deceased Giosuè). He said the child was born 'from his union with a woman, unmarried, not relative of him nor akin to degrees that prevent recognition'.
The last lines give the names of witnesses, for the second I read Pasquale Tedesco, 33 yo, probably a relative.
The words concerning the mother left open the possibility of a recognition of the child also by the mother, usually after a marriage of the parents, but it seems this didn't happen, as it should have been written in a side note (unless for some reason the note has not been made).

Thank you, Cedrone!
I couldn't make out Giosuè--it's a given name I've rarely seen. We appreciate the clarity on the note about the mother!

This may be the older Nicola's birth in 1839 where his father is listed as Gesue'---does anyone see any issues with making this connection?

Re: Nicola Tedesco Birth Act
I'd say you are right. There is a small error in the age of Nicola in the birth act of the son (56 instead of 55, as born in 1894), but this was usual, ages were not always accurate; also Gesuè instead of Giosuè (the correct Italian name) could be if not a mistake, a local dialectal form; then the place of birth is indicated as S. Caterina in both acts, seems the name of a hamlet where there was the house of that family.
I suppose you have looked at the registers of all 1838 and then 1839 to find it. (I didn't look if there is an index).

Re: Nicola Tedesco Birth Act
Thanks again! I did scan all of 1838 (NO INDEXES!
and broken into 3 separate groupings to include the nearby hamlets) and did not find Nicola....fortunately, he showed up early in 1839
Santa Caterina in modern times has been difficult for me to locate, the recordings shown in Giffoni Valle Piana's books on antenati include the hamlets to the north of Catalde, Sovvieco, Curti Curticelle, Ornito and others....the most likely (99%) location I can find on modern google maps is just beside Sovvieco on SP26c and called there San Giovanni-Santa Caterina...I'm guessing the two hamlets joined or it got renamed at some point....?

Re: Nicola Tedesco Birth Act
Yes, I think it's the same Santa Caterina, as it is a comune with many hamlets and also Sovvieco is part of Giffoni Valle Piana. Probably after so many years the new buildings have joined together the two old hamlets and now they are considered a single village.
