Frazione etc

I was happily searching the LDS Family History as I have done before and looking for info on Formicola (CE) when I got not only Formicola ,but Liberi di Formicola and Schiavi di Formicola as well. I am confused .What are these 2 all about ? Are they frazione of Formicola ? And, what is a frazione anyway?Are there more subdivisions of towns I need to know? I know my Grandfather came from Formicola and I believe the specific sub-division was Funari. I need help! Thanks .

frazione is an hamlet, belonging to the comune.
So if your father was born in an hamlet , his birth record is saved to the civil record office of the comune where it belongs to.

Also.

Some towns in Central and Southern Italy have areas called contrada, occasionally you will see them referred to as Contrada ...... for example. In Calabria you will sometimes see actuall areas referred to in records as area or aria ..... with corresponding names.
