Death of Soldier in Asti

Post by Tanner »

Here is the death act of a soldier, Stefano D'Urso, from his town of birth Toritto and where he died, Asti.

Asti: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1937992

I know it says he died in a hospital, and was in the engineer regiment. Any idea what he would be doing in Asti? To my knowledge there was no war/conflict in mainland Italy at this point. Possibly disease? But not sure what an engineer in the army would be doing anyway. Just wondering if anyone can provide some historical insight as to why he would be in Asti, or what being in the army at this point in time in Italy was like.

Thank you!

Hi! I know that around this time in Italy, there was a mandatory period of time where males would have to serve in the military, even if there was no conflict. This often required soldiers to relocate to certain locations for an extended period of time. Maybe he was relocated to Asti and happened to get injured there? Of course the situation could be totally different if Sefano voluntarily entered the army.. Hope it offers some help, good luck!

In Italy there has been a compulsary military service until recent times (I do not remember the exact year). I think there were soldiers in any province chieftown.
I remember the many soldiers in the streets of my town in the evening.
And they were sent where necessary, they didn't remain where there were born or living.
So this soldier was probably doing his usual (compulsary) service (not a professional soldier) in Asti and died in the usual hospital of the town for an "usual" disease or accident, nothing to do with a war.

Thanks for providing some context! Not a romantic story as I thought it could be. Most of my relatives were born, married and died in the same village so this was a departure from the norm I was curious about. I wish there was a way to get a photo of this guy, though I doubt any military records would include a photo ID at this time. Thanks again!
