First Two Lines

Post by darkerhorse »

I'd like the first two lines of this 1651 Riveli record translated to confirm place of residence.

"Revelo che Vicenzo Pitrozzello qdam Joanis (?) habitante in q(ue)sta tera di S(an)to Miceli (?)..."
Living in this town of San Michele (?). However, I guess you know what "this town" is.

Thanks, Pippo.

A bit confusing because the record is located in the section for the town of Melilli in Siracusa Province. I don't recognize St. Miceli as a neighborhood in Melilli or a town in Siclly.

Doesn't "quondam" mean formerly in Latin? Could the document be referencing his former place of residence?

Melilli used to be spelled Mililli but I've never seen it include Santo. Could it be a different word other than saint, perhaps an abbreviation for town or municipality?

I originally read it as "Inglaterra" (England) but "in questa terra" makes much more sense!

No guess on the word Joanis? I read the letter "d" in that word.

It should mean "the deceased Giovanni"

Yes, maybe. I must that I read Stto (with a double "t"); maybe it meant "in the land of <a person name>?

I suppose Giovanni could be his father.
