Emigration from Lazio to Puglia

Hello!

I have an ancestor who left Pulcherini, Latina, Lazio around between 1770 and 1790 and traveled to Foggia area, where he married, had children, and died. I am wondering what could have caused him to travel so far around this time period?

Pulcherini is not a city, but it is part of the City of Minturno. Also, the province of Latina didn't exist until 1931.

Minturno and Foggia were both in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies at the time, so even if there was a remarkable distance between the two places, both were in the same country.

Hi Nick - This doesn't answer your question, but apparently, Pulcherini was known as "Bulgarini" in the 1860s and 1870s. Here's a modern Google map of the area, showing Pulcherini just northeast of Santa Maria Infante:

My family is from Minturno (known in the 19th century as Tufo), which is just 3 miles south of Pulcherini. In 1987, Mario Rasile (a resident of Minturno) wrote a book "A Brief History of Tufo, A Hamlet in Traetto (Minturno)." There was nothing of any significance in his book that happened in Tufo between 1770 and 1790. However, Mr. Rasile wrote that in 1799, French troops marched through the town. According to Mr. Rasile, the French soldiers killed 12 people in Santa Maria Infante and 349 in Traetto, 9 of whom were children.

Hi again Nick - I just found a Facebook group, "Cultura Minturno Scauri," where one of the members posted a map showing the comune of Bulgarini just north of Traetto. Here's a link to the map on Facebook:

A member posted this description of the map on September 8, 2019:

"Traetto ed i suoi Casali nel 1804.
Carta Rizzi-Zannoni.
Scauri era solo un centro produttivo e Simonelli, oggi Marina, era solo una Taverna.
Sono presenti solo i Casali collinari. I due fronte mare con Triminzuro, oggi Tremensuoli, e Tufo.
Ed i due Casali interni cioè Santa Maria di Leffola, oggi Santa Maria Infante, e Bulgarini, oggi Pulcherini.
Nel tempo questi Casali, a parte Tufo, formatisi a cavallo dell'anno mille, hanno cambiato continuamente denominazione.
Avevano funzione quasi esclusivamente agricola."

The person who posted said, when the map was made in 1804, that Pulcherini was known as Bulgarini.

I found more about Pulcherini. It is very briefly mentioned in the book, Dizionario, Geografico-Istorico-Fiscio, Del Regno di Napoli, which was published in 1796. Apparently, it was called "Polcarini" at when Dizionario was published. Here are links to the four instances of the name "Polcarini" in Dizionario:

The reference on page 58 says it was one of the "four small villas" in the Traetto district.

In case you're interested, the text said the agricultural products of the area included "grains, legumes, fruits, wines, and oils."

Thank you all! I have church records from 1797-early 1800s saying “Pulcherini”. I’m confused, would the town be called that during this time period? The records are from Panni, FG. Maybe I have the wrong town?

My advice is, when you have a genealogical issue, just say what you are sure of, and do not come to conclusions that might mislead those who can help you.
