Translation of Marriage Document

Post by sahartung »

Hello, I think this document may be the marriage certificate of my great grandparents Donato Santoro and Caterina Grande. They lived in Teano, Italy but not sure if that is specified on this document or in that area? Any help with translation would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Sharon Hartung

P.S. I hope you can read this file ok, please let me know if you have trouble with it.

Yes, it's them. Married in Teano. Both live in Teano and both born in the village of Tranzi within the town of Teano.

He's 26 and she's 25. Both are laborers. His father Antonio is deceased, his mother Michela Izzo is living. Her father Paride Grande is living, and her mother Carmina Verdosa is deceased. Recorded at 11:20am on September 18, 1887.

Someone else can make any corrections and translate the rest.

One family tree has Catrina's mother as Carmina Viscosi.

I suppose it's possible that it reads Carmina widow.

I'm sure others will resolve it.

That doesn't make sense - ignore that comment - becasue he's alive and she's deceased! It must be her surname.

No doubt surname is Verdosa, make a comparison letter by letter with other similar letter in the act. But was quite common at the time to have wrong name or surname recorded by the employers for several reasons. In this case the married couple are both illeterate (as stated at the end of document), probably they produced an illegible paper someone wrote for them and the employer interpreted as Verdosa. Employers in small towns were not so skilled or better than the illetterates...
To have some confirmation you have to check on Pubblicazioni register of the same year. Pubblicazioni of Marriage is an act you have to do one month before the official marriage date. The intention to marry is published and exposed in Comune office hall and coul be seen by everyone interested. In this way if someone knows your marriage could be illegally can denounce it to the authority blocking the marriage. Pubblicazioni is more interesting than tha marriage act because at this stage the couple have to produce a lots of documents like Birth act, cityzen act, Death act of preavious husband/wife and so long. Good luck.
