some kind of mystery....

Post by dmt1955 »

1914 ariano di puglic birth act #532 for agostino formato.

as i understand this, his birth act is decreed to be false.
however, he married 4 jan 1937 to antonia di gruttola. his age at time of marriage and his parents' names all correspond.

any thoughts about this - under what circumstances does this usually occur? i assume i would have to get access to 1953 court records to understand makes this record false. because, indeed, he does exist......

thanks

It is indeed a mystery how can someone's birth record be declared false after nearly 40 years. The only way to know would be to acquire the court ruling, which by now should have been transferred to the Archivio di Stato in Avellino.

A copy of the ruling should also be in the attachments folder of the records of the city of Ariano Irpino for the year 1954.

I'm sure HE existed, but perhaps the circumstances in the birth act did not. It's possible he was another couple's child, possibly to hide the shame of young and unwed parents (possibly related to one of the principals in the act), or fraudulently passed off as the couple's child to avert the red tape of an adoption.

Could be a thousand reasons. Arturo.C is correct that the only way to know for certain is to see a copy of the ruling in the Ariano Irpino archives.
